Their center is searching for Kitchen & Housekeeping crew to fill the following positions for the upcoming season. The following positions are ten and a half month terms that could become “Permanent Recurrent” based on the person and the organizational fit.
Kitchen Helper (Position available) (February 1st, 2020)
Under supervision, engage in routine duties involved in preparing and serving food, and in cleaning food service equipment. Desirable qualifications are: Knowledge of kitchen and dining room work, good personal hygiene, sound knife skills and standard operation of kitchen appliances and equipment. Applicants must be able to learn routines involved in preparing and serving food, possess the ability to follow instructions both oral and written and be in good physical health. Candidates must possess a Food-safe level 1 (or be willing to take a course). Candidates must be willing to work all shifts (weekends, early morning or nights.) Pay rates for these positions range from $15.00 to $17.00 per hour plus benefits based on experience and qualifications.
Cook: Position available (February 1st, 2020)
Two Strong cooks required for their fall and winter season. As a member of their production team these cooks will be involved in providing daily service to their students, researchers and guests as well as some special event production. A Red Seal, is always preferred, food safe is required with some experience in catering production. A sound background in all aspects of kitchen operation is a strong asset. These positions require a strong personality, the ability to take direction clearly and a desire to be a positive, reliable member of their crew. The positions will be responsible for breakfast, lunch and dinner production in their unionized work environment. Pay rates for these positions range from $18.00 to $21.10 per hour plus benefits based on experience and qualifications.
House Keeping: Position available (February 1st, 2020)
House-keeping staff members are required for their fall season both for full time and holiday relief. The house–keeping position duties include: vacuuming, dusting, mopping, polishing and disinfecting, in all facilities. The position will involve scrubbing, all surfaces, of furnishings, Washing floors, walls, and general cleaning of all accommodations and classroom facilities. The candidate will be required to work with minimum supervision to ensure facilities in all aspects are maintained to standards in regard to cleanliness, safety and appearance. Abilities required include; a working knowledge of WHIMIS, the physical ability to carry out the duties such as, stair climbing, lifting, stretching and bending. The requirement to work all shifts is also a must. Pay rates for these positions are $15.61 per hour plus benefits.
The Bamfield Marine Science Centre is a satellite campus of the University of Victoria located in beautiful Bamfield, British Columbia. Their kitchen provides healthy innovative meals for their student, research and public education clientele as they strive to provide a “from scratch” culinary experience. The kitchen at Bamfield Marine science Centre is well equipped, clean and fully functional with a small conference centre seating 150 people.
The Bamfield Marine Science Centre operates from February 1st to December 15th. They offer a unique working environment in a unique setting. They offer subsidized staff accommodations for up to six months as transitional housing.
They require all applicants submit a current CV with references for all positions. Applicants will be contacted in early October for telephone interviews and to arrange 3 day “paid tryouts” for these positions with meals, basic transportation costs and accommodations being provided by The Bamfield Marine Science Centre.
